Littering in Nairobi CBD to Attract Immediate Arrest, Warns Geoffrey Mosiria

Nairobi City County is going hard on cleanliness in the Central Business District (CBD. Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria said that anyone who is caught littering rather than using the newly installed bins will be arrested.

The plastic litter bins that are not resaleable were introduced by the county last week, with the implication that they cannot be resold to scrap metal dealers. However, some of them have already been stolen, and their culprits are believed to be scrap metal companies.

“If you see anyone attempting to vandalize them, be the first to stop them. We will arrest anyone found dumping waste in the CBD instead of using the bins. The culture of littering must stop, so do not blame us for taking action against offenders,” Mosiria stated. He also urged Nairobians to report any individual refusing to utilize the bins or the individuals attempting to swipe them.

In an effort to protect public property, Mosiria has initiated a reward cash system: Ksh 5,000 to whoever gives information and helps in the arrest of an individual stealing a litter bin. Ksh 10,000 to whistleblowers who expose scrap metal dealers with stolen bins.

“Cleaning Nairobi is the only way we can compete with world-class cities like New York and London. Let us unite to make our city clean and public resources safe,” Mosiria pleaded.
