Fake News Alert: No Government Directive on Kaptagat Forest Fencing, Says Ministry

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry has flagged down a fake gazette notice circulating online. The fake  gazette claims that the government has issued a directive on the fencing of Kaptagat forest. The notice further alleges  that the fencing was to commence immediately under official instructions.

In a Facebook post dated 9/9/2025, the ministry clarified the information circulating online is false. The statement posted on the Ministry’s official page read,

“The information contained in the circulating Gazette Notice purports that the Government has issued directions on fencing of Kaptagat Forest. This is FALSE and FAKE information. The true position is that no such Gazette Notice has been issued. Members of the public are called upon to disregard it with the contempt it deserves,”

Kaptagat Forest, located on the border of Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu counties, is a critical water catchment and a key site for national tree-growing programmes.

Fake and false news on sensitive  matters like climate, forests and conservation have been on the rise.

The government has urged Kenyans to always verify such claims through official channels before sharing. The ministry also assured the public that any notices will only be communicated through their verified channels and platforms.
