Ministry of Tourism ,Kenya has announced partnership with Samburu National Reserve during launch of an astro-tourism initiative. The launch that will happen in the mentioned reserve will coincide with the total lunar eclipse; “blood moon.”
The Ministry shared that the timing of the launch is not a coincidence, “The launch coincides with a total lunar eclipse dubbed ‘blood moon’,” the statement read. “With minimal light pollution, clear equatorial skies, and unique landscapes, Samburu presents an unparalleled opportunity to showcase Kenya’s celestial wonders.”
Rebecca Miano, Tourism and wildlife Cabinet Secretary is expected to headline the launch which will be held at Sopa Lodge within the Samburu National Reserve. On her X page, Miano posted; ”Tonight, we are not just witnessing a total lunar eclipse but embarking on a new journey, illuminating a path to a future where our tourism sector shines brighter than ever before. Not just ‘blood moon’ moment but a dawn in our tourism sector.” The event which will attract both national and international visitors is expected to expand Kenya’s tourism and promote Samburu as a preferred destination for stargazers.
Kenya Space Agency assured star gazers that the eclipse will be visible to all asserting that moon watching with the naked eye is safe to the public, “Unlike solar eclipses, no special glasses or filters are required to watch a lunar eclipse,” the agency stated. “It is completely safe to view with the naked eye. For a closer and more detailed view of the red moon, binoculars or a telescope can be used, but they are not necessary to enjoy the event.”
With the darkest skies in Africa , Samburu provides an unique place for a clear view of the sky. The Astrotourism initiative will incorporate indigenous Samburu tradition and understanding of the stars to the celestial experience.Visitors will also enjoy activities like nature walks and wildlife safaris making the experience all-encompassing.
